Floor Frame & Padding

  • Minimum 2” of bearing surface supporting each leg.
  • Opening can be square or round.
  • Rough opening should be 8” wider than the diameter of the chute.

Intake Section & Throat

  • 16 Gauge Aluminized Steel with slip joints (allow slight variations in height.)
  • One piece integral throat section (not added in the field).

Fully welded factory throat

Intake Doors

  • Stainless steel, self-closing, self-latching, with protected closer
  • Piano style hinge with deflector flap.
  • UL labeled doors (rated 1.5 hours with max temp rise 250 degrees in 30 minutes)

 

Vent Cap

  • Purpose of a vent is to dissipate odors and hot gases, smoke and flames in event of fire within the chute.
  • NFPA 82 code requires a full diameter vent penetrating and extending 3’ above the roof.

Sprinklers

PER NFPA 82

  • Above the top intake
  • Every alternate floor down to, and including the first floor above discharge
  • Sprinkler heads fuse at 165 degrees F to open up and flood the chute

OTHER

  • Sprinkler heads are installed in top corner of intake throat, with protective guard.
  • The automatic sprinkler heads furnished with the chute should be installed and piped in accordance with NFPA standards (by others).

Disinfecting & Flushing System

Disinfecting & sanitizing unit (D&S) flushing head & access door

  • A flushing spray head at top of each chute
  • Lockable access door above top intake
  • Manual shutoff valve – (installation & connection by others)
  • D&S reservoir tank & proportioning valve provided by manufacturer
  • D&S unit injects disinfecting solution into the water flow through the flushing spray head system

Discharge Door

  • All held open by a 165 degree fusible link
  • When link is melted, door will roll or slam shut

Heat Sensor

Heat detection sensor & fire alarm

  • Can be installed with both electrical and pneumatic interlock door systems
  • Shuts the chute system down in the event of a fire emergency
  • Shuts off power to the doors at the control box for the electrical interlocks doors
  • Dumps all air from the pneumatic interlock system to prevent the doors from opening

FIRE ALARM

  • The chute system manufacturer provides a hook-up connection only for integration into the building alarm systems (by others).

Chute Material

Chutes handling hotel, hospital or general household linen should be made of not lighter than 16 ga. aluminized steel or stainless steel.

Intake Doors

Typical 18" wide x 18" high, hand operated intake doors, self-closing, self-latching, noiseless, side hinged 170° swing with 1-1/2 hour ‘UL’ label; maximum 30-minute, 250° F temperature rise. Entire door (front and back panels) in stainless steel finish with ADA compliant lever handle with lock and 2 keys. Patent Pending

Discharge

For built in wall discharge of hopper type, a self-closing, top hinged, 1-1/2 hour ‘UL’ label door is furnished with 165° F fusible link. (Drain is optional). For direct discharge into receptacle use standard trash chute discharge.

Vent

Full diameter vent of same gauge as chute extending minimum of 3 feet (per NFPA) above roof with metal safety cap. See picture on page 2.

Floor Frames

Standard floor frames are 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 3/16" steel angle 12" longer than the chute diameter.

Standard Accessories

1/2" NPT sprinkler and 3/4" NPT flushing heads above top intake. Additional 1/2" sprinkler heads at alternate intakes and at first intake as required by NFPA code.

Chute Construction

Chutes shall be fully factory assembled with all joints welded. There shall be a minimum of one expansion joint per floor and a flush interior assembled without bolts, rivets or clips. The intake door and frame shall be adjustable and securely fastened to the intake throats that are formed as an integral part of the chute section. Chute throat shall have a standard dimension of 10". Larger throats built to accommodate special job conditions. Chute shall be straight and plumb with no offset.

Chute Material

Discharge

The Accordion Fire Damper spring loaded discharge bears a 1-1/2 hour ‘UL’ label and is held open by a 165° fusible link assembly. This door is intended to provide smoke and fire protection to the chute riser and is not designed to perform as a shut off gate.

Vent

Full diameter vent of same gauge as chute extending minimum of 3 feet (per NFPA) above roof with metal safety cap.

Floor Frames

Standard floor frames are 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 3/16" steel angle 12" longer than the chute diameter.

Note: Sheet metal contractor shall assemble the chute in place as per detail in shop drawings, align and anchor as required. Plumbing contractor to connect all water supply lines to flushing and sprinkler heads. Electrical contractor to complete any wiring that may be necessary for the electrical interlocks. Masonry or carpentry contractor to erect surrounding shaft walls after chute is set in place.

Chutes are intended for multi-level buildings and can be used for trash, linen or recycling. Chutes are fully factory assembled with all joints welded and there is a minimum of one expansion joint per floor with a flush interior assembly without bolts, rivets or clips. The intake door and frame are adjustable and securely fastened to the intake throats that are formed as an integral part of the chute section.

The chute system consists of a roof cap, sanitizing & flushing system, intake door (linen or trash), floor frame, discharge door, and trash compactor. When planning a chute system, the best solution is to design it straight, with no offsets. When an offset is needed, it must be no greater than 15 degrees per NFPA code.

Each floor has a frame installed to support the section of chute for that level.

The roof cap. The purpose of the roof cap is to allow for a vent to dissipate odors and hot gases. Plus, allowing for smoke and flames in the event of a fire. NFPA code requires a full diameter vent penetrating and extending 3 feet above the roof, installed on the curb, which is provided by the contractor. When designing the roof cap(s), CARE supplies an aluminum vent cap and flashing over the chute penetration. (Gordons caps)

Each floor's intake doors are sized to the dimension of the trash or linen chute. The intake doors feature all stainless-steel doors, are self-closing, self-latching, and have a protected closer. These doors are UL labeled, which are rated at 1.5 hours with a maximum temperature rise of 250 degrees in 30 minutes.

CARE offers optional pneumatic and plug and play features with electric interlocking doors. And, all meet ADA requirements. The electric interlocks, being plug and play, require no electrician, saving our customers money.

ADA:

In accordance with NFPA 82, CARE supplies sprinklers, for installation by a plumber, above the top intake and at every alternate floor above the discharge. The sprinkler heads fuse at 165F degrees to open and flood the chute in case of fire. These sprinklers are supplied by CARE, but must be installed by a plumber. They are placed in the top corner of the intake throat, with a protective guard.

In order to keep the chute clean, a disinfecting and sanitization unit is installed above the top intake door. It is in a lockable access door with a cleaning solution and can have a manual shut-off valve (connected by other trade).

At the bottom of the unit is the discharge door(s), which are held open by a 165F degree fusible link. In case of fire, the link is melted and the door will roll or slam shut.

Debris Chute

The CARE debris chute systems come with a large 24" inside diameter and are thicker with a more resilient HDPE. They feature high-abrasion resistance, a higher thickness for longer life, and are safe, easy, and quick to install. These units can easily pay for themselves in two to three uses! And, your organization can enjoy even more benefits through our rental program.

The system is extremely flexible, with galvanized hardware section that are telescopic for ease of storage and transportation. The intermediate intakes can be easily placed anywhere along chute.

These systems are available in floor or window mounted and are suited for roofing, renovation and new construction. Both are a complete system and are window/parapet mountable, scaffold mountable, and flat roof mountable. They come with telescopic HMHDPE 24-inch chute bodies, a floor intake hopper, holding frame bracket, and galvanized rods for the floor connections.

The advantages of a debris chute are timely debris collection, safe and secure collection, and quick simple and convenient disposal of debris. The debris chute cuts down on labor, maximizing risk on a work site.

Compactors

Depending on your needs, there are four basic types of compactor.

Self-Contained. Self-contained compactors are one complete unitized unit intended primarily, although not exclusively, for the collection of materials where liquids are present.

This compactor is most commonly used for the disposal of wet waste. It is referred to as "self-contained" as it is a sealed unit to prevent leakage with the compactor's charge head and container permanently attached to each other and mounted on a frame style understructure to match the hauler's truck. The compactor is unitized to control liquid. It can be activated in a variety of ways and will accommodate various hoppers and cart dumpers. When the compactor is full the hauler pulls the entire unit onto the truck, normally from the charge chamber end, hauls it to the disposal site, and opens the rear discharge door to empty the contents. It is then returned to its home location.

 

Stationary. Stationary compactors are intended primarily, although not exclusively, for the collection of materials where liquids are not present.

Selecting the correct compactor begins with its application. This compactor is most commonly used for the disposal of heavier dry waste or recyclables. The compactor is positioned and anchored to a concrete pad. A receiver container is then coupled to the compactor using heavy-duty hooks to secure it in place during the compaction phase. When the container is full the hooks are unlatched and the container is hauled away to be emptied. Stationary compactors range from small sizes for under the chute applications inside buildings to very large models which are intended for use at transfer station.

 

High Rise. When a high rise building calls for internal trash chutes a small compactor is often placed directly below it. The chute provides the tenant the convenience of disposing of their trash by merely bagging their trash and dropping it into the chute. The compactor receives the trash and presses it into a container.

This compactor is the most commonly used compactor in conjunction with a trash chute. The compactor is anchored to the floor where it receives the trash. It is activated by a photo eye and packs the trash into a 2 to 4 cubic yard container. When the container is full it is disconnected from the compactor and later emptied by the hauler's frontload truck.

 

Small Compactors. These are small stationary compactors (2 to 4 cubic yard capacities) and are designed for low to moderate volume waste generators. They are perfect for applications such as retail stores, distribution centers, warehouses, shopping malls, and other businesses that generate low to moderate volumes of dry waste, and would like to enjoy the benefits of compaction of their waste stream.

These machines can also be used to isolate and compact recyclable materials such as cardboard and plastic where a baler is not suitable or practical and are designed to require minimal maintenance and repair to limit the disruption to your operations. Balers

A baler is typically used as a production machine and frequently an income producer. Balers should be sized and sited to process a certain amount of product or material within a given time. The type, volume, condition of the material being baled, and available space will determine the right baler for you. Vertical Balers. When it comes to baling, the vertical baler is the most popular and widely used model in the country.

These balers range in sizes from 36" bale width to 72" bale width and the size of the baler, and material being baled, will influence the weight of the bale. Ranging in size of bales produced, the vertical baler can be used for a variety of applications. Common uses for a verical baler are for cardboard, hard plastic, aluminum cans, some metals, paper, p.e.t. bottles, rags, plastic film, grocery outlets, hotels, shopping centers, manufacturing facilities, retail outlets, warehouses, distribution centers, department stores, recycling centers, hospitals

Typical sizes/models are:

  • 36" model with a bale size of 36"W x 24"D x 28"H and an average weight of 150 Lbs.
  • 42" model with a bale size of 42"W x 30"D x 48"H and an average weight of 750 Lbs.
  • 46" model with a bale size of 46"W x 30"D x 48"H and an average weight of 750 Lbs.
  • 60" model with a bale size of 60"W x 30"D x 48"H and an average weight of 800-1000 Lbs.
  • 72" model with a bale size of 72"W x 30"D x 48"H and an average weight of 1200 Lbs.

Horizontal Balers. For baling large volumes of material.

When baling large volumes of material the proper type and size of baler is critical. The piling up of material and creating the slowing or stopping of production lines can be costly. Horizontal balers are designed to handle large volumes, make dense bales, and be automated for labor reduction and safety.

Horizontal Balers are designed for ease of installation, operation and maintenance and most balers can operate manually or automatically with photo electric cell control. The Cram-A-Lot HE-60 is ideal for warehouses, users baling waste paper, corrugated, newsprint, office white, plastics, foam rubber, light aluminum and other recyclables without pre-conditioning or fluffing required.
